When Floss the sheepdog has puppies, the farmer says the children can keep one to help Floss with the work on the farm. But which should they choose? Some play chase and tug-of-war, but the littlest one, Sam, follows his mother and soon comes face to face with a sheep. Although he wants to, Sam doesn't run and it soon becomes clear who will help Floss on the farm. Kimm Lewis's wonderful pencil-washed illustrations reflect both the barrenness of the winter landscape and the warmth between the humans and the animals. The simple repetitive text, large print and superb illustrations of the animals ensure that this will appeal to all young children. (Ages 3 to 7)
