The conversion of the L-749 was the largest extension ever made on a propeller aircraft. By adding fuselage sections, the length has been increased by 5.59 m. Other important changes included the general reinforcement of the airframe, rectangular windows, larger tanks and the use of new engines. The first L-1049 was commissioned by Eastern on December 15, 1951. The largest "Super Connie" fleets had TWA and Eastern Air Lines.
