About the Author Gerald M. Ackerman was born in California. He was educated at the University of California at Berkeley, then at the University of Munich and at Princeton University where he obtained a Ph.D. He then taught at Bryn Mawr College, Stanford University, and St. Petersburg State University (Fullbright Chair). For twenty years, he was a professor at Pomona College, California. He has published articles and reviews in Art Bulletin, the Gazette of Fine Arts, Burlington Magazine, Art News, Archivio de Arte Español, Arts, as well as in other journals. He is the author of the catalog of the exhibition "Gérôme" organized in 1972 in Dayton, Ohio, and books The Orientalists of the British School, The Orientalists of the American School, and Charles Bargue and Jean- Léon Gérôme. He has published studies on other European and American artists of the nineteenth century, on the theory of Academic Art, the history of the Salons, and many other subjects, and is also the author of three plays that were represented in California.
