Locally infected wounds contain: bacteria, slough, exudate, biofilm and necrotic tissue. The presence of these materials in the wound maintains an ideal environment for bacterial proliferation and biofilm formation[1] and may act as a barrier for any antimicrobial or anti-biofilm proper action of Ag+ ions in the wound. Effectively fighting against local infection requires a combined antimicrobial and cleaning action to remove all materials that may limit the action of the silver ions. Cleaning the wound can reduce the risk of infection, by removing all materials where microorganisms may attach, disseminate and form biofilm thus cause infection.
