The TANITA BC-718 Body Composition Monitor features a large, easy-to-read touchscreen LCD display that gives you 10 body composition readings, including our unique Metabolic Age, which tells you what age your body is currently rated at based on your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR ). The BC-718 tracks the measurements of up to 5 users and is the ideal family partner. With the recall function you can look at the previous measurements. Our TANITA home scales have helped 30 million customers fit and healthy, and our excellent reputation has made us the #1 choice for body composition scales. The following values are determined: • Weight in 100 gram increments • Body fat in 0.1% increments • Visceral fat • Body water in 100 gram increments • Muscle mass in 100 gram increments • Bone mineral mass in 100 gram increments • Basal Metabolic Age • Calories Basal Metabolic Rate • Physique Rating • BMI The values in detail: Display and assessment of body fat Body fat is vital for daily bodily functions. It protects the organs, cushions joints, regulates body temperature, stores vitamins and serves as an energy store for the body. Even our appearance depends on it. Skin, hair and nails would be dull, brittle or non-existent without body fat. But again, too much body fat can lead to health problems such as cardiovascular disease or diabetes. Most people believe that weight, and not body fat percentage, is a measure of health and physical fitness. A fallacy! For example, during a diet or exercise program, weight may go up, but body fat percentage may go down slowly. Measured against the success of the program, this means: weight down, but body fat percentage still clearly too high. Here, conclusions must be drawn about diet and exercise habits. Display and assessment of total muscle mass: Total muscle mass is shown in absolute terms in kg. The size of the total muscle mass measured in each case is the health-related indicator for the current metabolic activity, cardiovascular resilience, immune activity and joint protection. By displaying in kg, you can easily monitor changes in muscle mass. Determination of visceral fat (fat deposits in the free abdominal cavity): Our body generally creates fat deposits under the skin (subcutaneous fat) and above all in the free abdominal cavity (visceral fat). Pathologically increased visceral fat (mainly due to lack of exercise and malnutrition) is considered a serious health risk, especially with regard to cardiovascular diseases (such as heart attacks and strokes) and type II diabetes, and should therefore be avoided if possible. Increased subcutaneous fat is more of a purely aesthetic problem. Body water display Everyone should drink 2-3 liters of water daily. Less affects the vital value for health and anti-aging. It has been known for a long time that people of all ages generally drink too little. Older people in particular often suffer from dehydration with massive consequences: declining memory performance, thickening of the blood with an increased risk of heart attacks or strokes and headaches. The cells can regenerate better and “age” more slowly. The blood stays more fluid, which relieves the pressure on blood vessels and the heart and thus also reduces the risk of heart attacks. All organs, even the intervertebral discs, benefit from optimal hydration. A good supply of moisture is even visually noticeable: the skin is plumper and remains smooth and young. Determination of total bone mass: For this purpose, the bone weight is given in kg. From a health point of view, a large bone mass is to be strived for through regular muscle building training (sport), if possible outdoors (UV light) and calcium-rich food. In adults, physical activity, especially strength training, maintains bone density and slows down the breakdown of bone mass (osteoporosis) that occurs with age. The muscle and bone mass is an indirectly determined value with a high quality of information. A certain percentage of lean mass is assumed to be bone mass, the rest is muscle mass. The skeletal musculature (in men an average of 40% and in women 30% of the total weight) and the visceral musculature (all organs) are summarized here. Metabolic Age: Comparative value based on age, height, gender and the current basal metabolic rate in relation to average people. From the age of about 16/17 years, the body slowly breaks down muscles and builds up fat mass. The calorie consumption decreases accordingly. This can be counteracted by physical activity, i.e. building muscles. This shows the statistical age to which your basal metabolic rate can be assigned. If your basal metabolic rate is higher than your actual age, this is an indication of excessive muscle wasting. Building muscle will improve your basal metabolic rate again. If your basal metabolic age is lower or much lower than your actual age, this is an indication of good physical condition - you then usually have little or no problems maintaining your weight, even if you eat a lot of calories. Stating the basal metabolic rate (GU): Calculated value from the lean mass = lean body mass (weight minus fat mass). This method is much more precise than the previously known method of calculating the basal metabolic rate from the total body weight. Shows you how many calories you already burn during the day when you are physically resting. Our musculature is our most metabolically active organ, so you can increase the basic calorie turnover by building muscle, if this is desirable for your health. If you are on a fat loss diet, you should never fall below this value, as this would be an undesirable signal for protein and muscle loss. Assessment of body composition (physique value): Assesses your weight and fat percentage in relation to height, gender, age and weight relative to average values. It is displayed as a dimensionless number (from 1 to 9, see attachment). Optimal are as large a musculature as possible and as little body fat as possible. Muscle quality display and assessment: Researchers have discovered a direct link between muscle quality and the phase angle measured by TANITA. This enables a direct assessment of personal muscle quality. Since muscle mass does not change much, especially in endurance sports, this is a better indicator for tracking the success of personal training and adapting training content accordingly. TANITA is a Japanese family business committed to helping people lead healthier lifestyles. After introducing the very first "fat meter" in the 1990s, BIA has made TANITA the world's No. 1 body composition analyzer, constantly providing ideal health insights to empower and motivate people around the world to take control of their health TANITA is the only manufacturer that offers body composition monitors for both fitness and medical professionals as well as consumers for home use. All TANITA scales are based on innovative Japanese technology and are produced in our own factories according to strict quality criteria.
