Engineers can harness the power of magnetic levitation (also known as maglev) in ways that seem very sci-fi! The most well-known use of this technology is probably in maglev trains. As the name implies, maglev trains rely on the principle of “likes repel”. The train track is lined with magnets, as is the bottom of the train itself. By positioning the magnets with like poles facing, the train can hover about half an inch above the track! And because of this, maglev trains don’t need wheels! The lack of contact between train and track has 2 main benefits: speed and efficiency. Normally, when two objects rub against each other friction will act to resist that motion. In the case of trains, friction slows down the movement of the wheels on a track. But when there is no contact between train and track, well, there’s no friction to slow things down! That means that maglev trains can reach astonishing speeds of over 400 km/h! And when there’s no friction to overcome, less energy is required to propel the train forward.
