Chamomile German CO2 has a less powerful aroma than steam distilled Chamomile German. It is softer, more herbaceous, and "truer" to the scent of the flower. The CO2 version also does not have the expected deep blue color of the steam distilled oil. Chamazulene, the component that gives Chamomile German its blue color, develops during the steam distillation process. However, Matricine, a component which is the precursor to Chamazulene, is proven to be even more potent in its effects, making Chamomile German CO2 the preferred oil to use to help protect and soothe dry or reddened skin.
