How many coats of primer do you recommend prior to venetian plaster? Will only one coat work? Would two coats be overkill?

I just bought the Ventian plaster for one dining room wall, one quart of primer will not cover it I am assuming the wall is 11 x 13

Micro Primer for 11x13 wall (143 Sq Ft) would need 2 quarts. You can dilute that primer with water about 20%.

Can this product go directly on top of drywall?

Yes, i put it directly on a textured painted drywall. Its fin. Make sure u put at least 2 coats.
