“I love you to the moon and back” is another attempt to convey the same idea. “To the moon and back” is a really, really long distance, an even grander expression of the huge amount of love the person is attempting to show. Of course, love isn’t a physical object you can measure in length or volume. And it’s theoretically infinite, anyway. But it’s a material metaphor that’s commonly employed in conversation.
