The F-Unit is probably the most recognized diesel locomotive in North American history. It was found on railroads from East to West and North to South. The EMD F7 was a 1500 hp multi-purpose locomotive, and in passenger service would be equipped with steam generators to power the trailing cars. The Atchison Topeka & Santa Fe railroad used F7 locomotives on its premier passenger trains, such as the “Super Chief” and the “El Capitan”, running them in groups of four in ABBA configuration to maximize speed and running efficiency.
