France’s brilliant comic actor, Fernandel plays six separate characters in this charming tour de force. Playing to character and not disguise, he creates the roles of the quintuplet sons of a local French winemaker who all have left home after being named as ‘National Treasures’. Now, an attempt is being made to round them up for a reunion on their fortieth birthday. The five are all different in temperament and create incredibly diverse vignettes when located. There’s the window washer, a hypochondriac with a bunch of kids of his own. The ‘lonely hearts’ columnist with a heart of gold. The beautician is both pompous and very, very prissy. And the village priest, who has an ‘identity’ problem. In the film’s most intense comic moment, there’s the ship's captain who bets both his craft and his delectable girl friend on the movements of a fly. And when they all return to the village there’s a most amazing surprise awaiting them. Nominated for the Academy award for ‘Best Story’ (1955).DVD EXTRA Amour & Publicité (1933)- A young couple playing a pair of newlyweds in a department store window discover that pretending is not the same as reality. Or is it ? - (B&W, English subtitles, 25 min).
